We often say “clothing, food, housing, and transportation,” which are the most essential aspects of life. In folk culture, our ancestors have summarized many feng shui sayings regarding these four elements. The old saying “A home with a blue dragon tree will never fail to become prosperous” is one such saying, reflecting the requirements our ancestors had for their living environments.
Traditionally, the Four Symbols (Qinglong, Baihu, Zhuque, and Xuanwu) were incorporated into the construction of living environments, with East, West, South, and North directions represented by “Qinglong (Blue Dragon),” “Baihu (White Tiger),” “Zhuque (Red Bird),” and “Xuanwu (Black Tortoise)” respectively。
“Qinglong” and “Baihu” refer to directions。 In ancient times, the most ideal house orientation was “sitting north facing south。” In such a house, the East direction is on the left, while the West is on the right。 Therefore, people have the saying of left Qinglong (Blue Dragon) and right Baihu (White Tiger), with front Zhuque (Red Bird) and back Xuanwu (Black Tortoise)。 Ancient people believed that when building a house, it should face north with its back to south。 The East side (Qinglong) must be higher than the West side (Baihu), which was considered one of the key conditions for an ideal living environment!
And in this saying “A home with a blue dragon tree will never fail to become prosperous” mentioned, “Qinglong” refers to the left direction, while “blue dragon tree” refers to the tree on the left side (east) of the front door。 The ancestors believed that in an ideal home, trees must not be lacking。 As the saying goes, Don’t plant mulberry trees in front and willows at the back; don’t plant catalpas or locusts in your courtyard。 It means that certain types of trees like mulberry, willow, catalpa, and locust should not be planted in yards。 Additionally, soap nut trees and osage orange (Bungea oleoides) are also not considered auspicious to plant in the yard。
Plant pomegranates on the east for wealth, plant persimmons on the west for silver, which is suitable for planting in courtyards。 The meanings behind these plants are quite straightforward: simply planting a pomegranate tree on the east side and a persimmon tree on the west will ensure good fortune。 From ancient times to today, countless people have planted pomegranates in their yards, with many continuing the tradition。 Pomegranate flowers and fruits are both beautiful and can be eaten。 Such versatile plants are rare。 The flowers of pomegranates are bright orange-red, vibrant and full of life, even bees dare not “offend” them!
