I-Ching Naming: Avoiding Awkward Homophones

I-Ching and traditional Chinese culture place great emphasis on the selection of names, with a scientific and systematic approach to name interpretation. When interpreting names, we must follow these four principles:

First, if the pronunciation of a name coincides with that of a Chinese word or concept, it should be interpreted based on its homophonic meaning。 For example, the name “Li Hua” can be interpreted as “Splendid and Elegant,” where “Li” represents Splendor and “Hua” symbolizes Elegance。

Second, if the pronunciation of a name matches that of an idiom or proverb, it should be interpreted according to its homophonic meaning。 For instance, the name “Wang Yang” can be interpreted as “Vast and Unfettered,” where “Yang” is homophilous with “yang”, meaning vast。

Third, if the pronunciation of a name corresponds to that of a specific noun or proper noun, it should be interpreted based on its homophonic meaning。 Recently, Mr。 Li Haotian mentioned with great hardship that his nephew had chosen an inappropriate name for his grandson, leading to familial discord and even contemplating legal action。 In traditional Chinese culture and I-Ching studies, this is considered an offense in both cultural traditions and metaphysical principles。

Fourth, if the pronunciation of a name does not correspond to any existing word, idiom, or proper noun, it should be interpreted based on its literal meaning。 For example, the name “Zhang Lijing” can be interpreted as:

Zhang “(Zhang) signifies “Expand” or “Enlarge,” representing the ability to open up opportunities。

Li (force) stands for “Strength” and “Capacity,” symbolizing one’s capabilities and talents。

Jing “means” Path “or” Diameter, “indicating the direction towards achieving goals。

Putting it all together, “Zhang Lijing” can be interpreted as:

A person has the ability to expand opportunities, has a strong capacity for growth, and is determined to follow a clear path towards achieving their goals。 This interpretation aligns with modern concepts of personal branding and career development。
