In the early days of planning and constructing the Beijing subway line 5, there was a legend that the construction plans were adjusted to avoid an ancient well near the North New Bridge (Běixīnqiáo). This well is said to be the “Dragon-Binding Well” mentioned in local lore.
The story goes that during the Japanese occupation of China, Japanese soldiers attempted to remove an iron chain from the well but were unable to do so。 As they pulled on the chain, black water began to rise from the well and a foul smell filled the air, causing the Japanese soldiers to retreat in fear。
During the Cultural Revolution, Red Guards also attempted to remove the chain but faced the same eerie outcome。 These events have led to a superstitious belief that disturbing the chain would result in catastrophic flooding。
